THERE was heartbreak for Kilbrittain as they came up short in the Rebel Óg U18 Division 2 hurling championship final in Bishopstown 4G.
Kilbrittain led right up to the 57th minute. Sean Coughlan nosed Passage West in front with a long range free. He followed up with two more points.
Kilbrittain pushed hard in injury time with three free attempts with a last-minute attempt driven into a crowded square to try and grab a goal which didn’t come.

Coughlan opened the scoring with a 65, but Kilbrittain led 0-4 to 0-1 at the quarter hour mark after scores from Odhran Madden, Loughlin O’Donnell, Brian Kelleher and Ronan Sheehy. A fine Kelleher point stretched the lead to four. Coughlan added a point against the run of play. Kelleher and Coughlan exchanged frees entering the last five minutes of the half. Kilbrittain finished the half strong to lead 0-8 to 0-3 at the break
Passage reduced the lead to three by the 36th minute. A Kelleher point for Kilbrittain was followed with scores from Coughlan and Odhran O’Donovan for Passage. Another Kelleher free kept Kilbrittain ticking over. A Coughlan free and a score from O’Donovan narrowed the gap to a point with 15 minutes left.
Shaye Ustianowski put two between them, but scores from Coughlan and Ben Horgan levelled the game, before Passage West made that winning burst.
