MELISSA Duggan is the ideal role model for the next generation of Cork ladies footballers, insists Rebels boss Joe Carroll.
The Dohenys star, in her tenth season of inter-county football, has been crowned The Croke Park Hotel/LGFA Player of the Month for April 2026 – a fitting accolade for one of the best defenders in the country.
Duggan (29) was named player of the match when Cork won the Division 1 league final against Galway, and was then named at corner back on the Division 1 team of the league.

Ever since she made her Cork senior debut in 2017, the Dohenys ace has been a central character for the Rebels, earning All-Star recognition in 2019. And she’s still producing the goods. Duggan delivers, always.
‘Melissa is utterly committed to what she's doing and she's a great leader for the younger players in the group,’ Cork boss Joe Carroll says.
‘She gives it 100 percent every time she goes on the pitch. She gives 100 percent at training. You never have a problem with her. She's always willing to listen to any advice that's given to her and she's a great example for younger players.
‘It's massive to have a player like Melissa. You can depend on her every day. If she has a poor performance, which is very, very rare, she's always willing to listen and set an example at the next training session.’
Melissa Duggan was named Player of the Match in the Division 1 league final.
Speaking to this paper recently, former Cork goalkeeper Martina O’Brien said ‘it would be a travesty if Melissa ended her career without an All-Ireland medal’, highlighting just how much her team-mates rate her.
‘Melissa has got great pace and she's very, very committed,’ Carroll explained.
‘She's not afraid of anything and not afraid to go into a tackle. She gives 100 percent.
‘She doesn't fear anybody, no matter who you put her marking. She won't be cribbing that she has to mark a good player. One of her biggest strengths is her ability to attack up the field and she's a scoring threat from the full-back line as much as she is playing in the half-back line.’
With Cork’s Munster championship over, attention now turns to the All-Ireland series, and Duggan will be key to the Rebels’ hopes of success.
