CARBERY made it two wins out of three in the Rebel Óg Premier 1 U15 Hurling League after a superb 5-23 to 5-17 away win against Glen Rovers.

This is the first year of the Carbery U15 hurling team, but they have hit the ground running. An opening round win against Blackrock (5-14 to 4-1) was followed by a loss to an impressive Ballincollig team (4-13 to 2-11), before Carbery returned to winning ways away to the Glen.

Jack Allen (Newcestown), who hit 1-6 against Ballincollig, was in top form here again – he finished with a brilliant 4-6. Oisín McCabe (Owen Gaels) continued his impressive form with 1-3, while Conor Cullinane (Owen Gaels) struck 0-6, including five from play.

Manager Joe O’Donnell, from Bantry Blues, feels this is a great opportunity for young players in the division to mix it with the best in the county at this grade. So far, they have grabbed their big chance.

‘All we want to do is show the players what it’s like to play at the top level, to raise their standards and ambition. It’s a great opportunity, especially for lads from smaller clubs who might not otherwise get that chance.’

The West Cork young guns played with the breeze in the opening half and led 1-4 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Jack Allen fired home a penalty early on, while Conor Cullinane was on fire, scoring four points in that period.

In the 14th minute, Allen scored goal number two but Glen Rovers began finding the range in the second quarter, sending over a flurry of points.

Carbery responded in kind, and then in the 26th minute, a line ball was cut in superbly by Oisín McCabe from all of 70 metres which deceived the goalkeeper and ended up in the Glen Rovers net.

The Glen got through for a goal before the break, as Carbery led by ten points, 3-11 to 1-7.

The Glen came into the game big time in the third quarter and began to reduce the Carbery lead with an early goal, followed by four points.

The mercurial Jack Allen grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and two goals midway through the half eased Carbery's worries. The divisional team piled on the pressure with some wonderful points from substitutes Jack Hegarty, Ben Twohig, and Alan Minehane, while Oisín McCabe chipped in with a few as well.

The Glen were far from finished and struck for quickfire goals to reduce the gap. The Carbery half-back line were superb as they cleared ball after ball under intense pressure.

Three further points from the Glen forwards set up an exciting finish, but Carbery had done enough to earn a six-point win.

Next up for Carbery is a home game with Douglas at Enniskeane on Thursday, May 28th. They will also play Midleton and Duhallow.
