ILEN ROVERS: The minor ladies footballers have been crowned West Cork minor B champions after a thrilling 4-6 to 2-9 final win against Beara at Rath on Saturday. Both sides scored after just two minutes and the tempo never let up. Ilen took a three-point lead courtesy of Maria Connolly’s early goal and a point from midfielder Holly O’Flynn. Ilen's strong defence and Sanne Connolly's brilliant goalkeeping kept Beara attacks off the scoreboard. A Beara penalty in the 23rd minute levelled the scores, but a stunning Carla O’Regan goal from a free gave Ilen a one-point half-time lead.
The second half saw Ilen come out strong, with O’Regan scoring two points on the bounce. However, Beara scored 1-3 to take a three-point lead after 27 minutes. The whole Ilen team dug deep. Full-back Clodagh Hickey's crucial carry from a short kick-out to beyond the halfway line found wing-forward Hannah O’Driscoll and Maria Connolly who set up Tiana Crosby Osabie's goal to level matters.
As the game looked like it was heading to a replay, a free was awarded to Ilen in the dying seconds. Carla O’Regan, who had already scored 1-5 at this point, stepped forward. Her composure shone through, as the ball glided under the crossbar, securing the match-winning goal for Ilen.
The minor ladies are in county C final action against Donoughmore in Bishopstown’s 4G pitch this Saturday (7.30pm). The U21 men’s team lost to St Peter’s 1-20 to 0-10 in the U21C county quarter-final on Tuesday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh 4G.
