We round up some of the local stories from the Fastnet Rally
CLASS 9 was very much a local family affair. Leading from the start, Drimoleague's Gary Lordan (Honda Civic) and his Dunmanway co-driver Alan O'Farrell netted the class win and 31st overall.
Drinagh's Martin Lordan (Gary's father) was his closest rival all through the eight stages, with Rathbarry's Joseph O'Sullivan on co-driving duties – they finished second in the class and 43rd overall.
The rally provided a first finish in 18 months for Kilcrohane's Jer O'Donovan, who was co-driven by Rosscarbery's Alistair Wyllie. The windscreen of their Ford Fiesta R5 fogged up on SS6 while a change of tyres for the final pair of stages paid dividends in terms of pace and left them to reflect on what could have been if he had changed them prior to the second loop.

Following their great season in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, Clonakilty's Eamonn and Lisa McCarthy (Honda Civic) made a positive start and led Class 11F by 5.8 seconds after SS2. But a nominal time for SS3 saw them drop to second. They eventually finished third in class that was won by Wexford's Sean Cahill (Honda Civic) and his Ballyvourney co-driver Ciara Griffin.
Unfortunately, it was another non-finish for Ardfield's Eoghan Calnan and his brother Conor – they had issues with the clutch and while they re-joined (on SS4) under Super Rally, the problem arose once more and resulted in retirement.
Schull's Frank Hurley (Ford Escort) and his co-driver Adrian Phelan were third in Class 10 until suspected engine issues forced them to retire prior to the end of the second loop of three stages.
Ballylickey's Robert Cronin spun his Opel Corsa Rally4 on the opening stage, it overheated on SS3 and spun again on SS3 before retiring when he slid off on SS6. He was co-driven by Kilkenny's Paddy Heffernan.
Macroom's Finbarr O'Brien (Honda Civic), who recently celebrated his 70th birthday and was competing in his second rally, finished 13th in Class 11F. His son Barry, also in a Honda Civic, was sixth in the same class – he admitted he couldn't get into his usual pace through the second loop of stages. Their respective co-drivers were Jack Murphy and Declan Buttimer.
Clonakilty's Aidan Hennessy, who was co-driven by Pakie McCarthy, campaigned a Ford Fiesta Rally3 for the first time and was second in Class 4 after the opening loop only to retire on SS4.
Rosscarbery brothers Jason and Jonathan O'Mahony (Ford Escort) won the Mick Campbell Trophy for finishing as the highest placed Skibbereen and District Car Club crew in the Modified category.
