CONOR Hourihane’s Barnsley came up short in their glamour FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool on Monday evening at Anfield, losing 4-1.

The scoreline doesn’t do the Bandon man’s team justice as two late goals from Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike made it look more comfortable than it actually was.

Premier League champions Liverpool led 2-1 up to 83 minutes, as Adam Phillips’ first-half goal had given the League 1 side a lifeline.

‘Unbelievably proud of the lads, I thought they were outstanding. Stuck with the plan from minute one to the very end. Got a little bit tired at the end, as you can imagine because we went so long without the ball at times but I thought we started the game so well,’ Hourihane reflected, happy with his team’s showing.

‘Stuck in it at 2-1, they brought on top player after top player. I think that was their best team out towards the end because they were making sure they got over the line themselves and I thought my lads did unbelievable.’
