Surely a Republic of Ireland call-up is only a matter of time for Bandon’s Conor Hourihane after he picked up another award this week.

The West Cork man has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for August after his terrific start to the season with newly-promoted Barnsley.

The Tykes sit third in the table on nine points after five games, with Hourihane in sparkling form, scoring twice and creating three more, as he has adapted to the Championship in super-quick fashion.

The talented midfielder has scored against both Ipswich Town and QPR.

Having scored 11 goals from midfield last season, and set-up a further 18 goals, and having racked up 14 goals the previous season, his first with Barnsley, Hourihane recently told The Southern Star that he is targeting double figures in his first Championship campaign.

‘I always have double figures in my head; that’s my target as a midfielder. To have chipped in with two already is a good start.’ he said.

‘I am coming up against better opposition so I was interested to see could I hold my own. To get off the mark with a couple so early in the season is nice and it proves I can handle it at this level. If I can get into double figures this season, I’ll be pleased.

Hourihane captained Barnsley to League 1 promotion final glory and Johnstone Paint Trophy success last season. He also won a Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for August 2014.
