TWO students from Baltimore, Áine O’Driscoll and Anna Carthy, as well as Dylan O’Rourke from Schull, recently took part in a world-class sailing competition in Los Angeles.
As part of a team of nine representing CIT, they competed in 10 races over a three-day event at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup Regatta.
CIT had the distinction of being the only non-American team in the LA Harbor Cup Regatta, which, in the interests of fairness, uses a fleet of identical Catalina 37ft sailboats.
Two years ago, CIT competed at the Student Yachting Worlds in La Rochelle in France. It was there they met Cal Maritime who subsequently invited them to take part in the LA Harbor Cup.
The students were hosted by LA Yacht Club, which provided all of their meals and accommodation, and ensured they got an introduction to the two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Terry Hutchinson.
Áine O’Driscoll and Anna Carthy stayed on board a yacht owned by Lisa and Tom Munzig, who had the foresight to equip the galley with all kinds of Irish produce including Kerrygold butter, Irish soda bread and cheese, crackers, cookies and Irish stout. They even decorated it with balloons in the Irish colours.
The CIT team was placed sixth overall – enough to secure an invitation next year.
The Cork team received sponsorship from Dubarry of Ireland and Cully & Sully.
