LAST Friday’s March Back in Time in Skibbereen drew some of the biggest crowds to the town in recent years with hundreds lining the streets to watch the spectacle. The town was lit up as night fell with marchers carrying flaming turf torches. Skibbereen stepped back in time as locals dressed up in old costumes and shops and businesses decorated their premises with old time displays
The Jeremiah O’Donovan Ross Torchlit Parade was led by Declan McCarthy, who took the role of Rossa, reenacted the demonstration that he organized in 1863 in support of Poland. Members of the Cork-Polish Association also took part in the parade, which saw members wearying traditional costumes.
Organisers of this event are to be congratulated for putting on such a dramatic and colourful event that saw Skibbereen celebrate one of their greatest townsmen.
This video by Ludgate Skibbereen captures the atmosphere at the parade.
