A MAJOR air and sea rescue is underway after a car went off a cliff at the Old Head of Kinsale earlier this evening. Valentia Coast Guard received a call from gardai in Anglesea Street at around 7.30pm this evening informing them that a car had gone over a cliff.

Both the Old Head of Kinsale Coastguard along with Kinsale RNLI and Courtmacsherry RNLI arrived on the scene along with Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford.

An initial search of the sea was carried out but the car is submerged in deep water. Rescue 117 returned to base, while the other lifeboats remained at the scene.

A low water search will take place at around 1:30am. There are no details of how many people are in the car.
