Galway win for Fergus O’Farrell film

Breaking Out, a film about Interference frontman Fergus O’Farrell, has taken a top award at the Galway Film Fleadh.

BREAKING Out – a feature-length documentary about the life of West Cork singer, musician and artist Fergus O’Farrell – had its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh last weekend and went on to win the award for Best Irish Documentary.

Directed by Michael McCormack, the film was 15 years in the making.

It tells the story of O’Farrell – an artist whose unique talent inspired a generation of songwriters and touched thousands of lives, in spite of his own lifelong struggle with muscular dystrophy.

O’Farrell passed away in 2016 aged 48, having been told that he wouldn’t survive beyond 18.

The soundtrack to Breaking Out consists of music written and performed by O’Farrell and his band Interference, including the song ‘Gold’ which previously featured in the Oscar-winning film Once, and is one of the highlights in the stage adaptation of that film.

The documentary also features contributions from members of O’Farrell’s family, friends and collaborators, including Glen Hansard and Jeremy Irons.
