Charlotte Donovan and family are the overall winners of the 2016 Leap Scarecrow Festival, which attracted thousands of people to the West Cork village over the October bank holiday weekend.
Charlotte Donovan and family are the overall winners of the 2016 Leap Scarecrow Festival, which attracted thousands of people to the West Cork village over the October bank holiday weekend.
Their creation featured a bird with an eyeball in its beak and eyes that light up at night through solar power. It was described by the judges as ‘an absolute work of art, full of life like this village – a fitting winner of the Leap Scarecrow Festival.’
The Southern Star was delighted to figure among the category prizewinners, with its entry taking the Scary award.
The Artistic category prize went to Justin Connolly for his Welded Man creation.
The Humorous award went to Rachel and Chloe Connolly for the horse in the hedge and his rider face down in the mud.
The Environmental prize was won by Nathan Soloman for ‘The Grim Reaper of Leap,’ made out of a single piece of wood.
First prize in the Youth & Schools category went to Leap National School junior infants to second class for the Big Friendly Giant with floppy years.
The Technically Brilliant award went to Mike and Patsy O' Donovan and their grandchildren for their beautifully-executed ‘The joy of horse jumping.’
Last, but not least, the Local Interest first prize was won by Shanahan’s Bar for ‘Sexy Betty.’
The festival was truly an outstanding success and a great credit to its ogranisers.
