SIR – Thanks for the piece on the roadworks in Schull. However, I have a quibble: the statement by the Cork County Council spokesperson that the proposed works were discussed with the Schull Business Association is inaccurate.
I believe nobody from the Council approached the association or contacted any one of us. I am on the committee of Schull Business Association.
One of the committee members heard about the works and we approached the local engineer. When she was questioned about the timing of the works, she came up with a variety of successive explanations and finished by saying it was the only week that suited the contractor.
When the contractor was contacted, a person there said that they would do the work whenever the Council wanted it done and that they would usually discuss any proposed works that would be disruptive to business with the business owners. The Council insisted that the work be done when it was done because the schools were closed.
I think the most galling thing is the utter disregard the Council has for those of us who contribute so much of its revenue. The fact that these actions were interfering with our business didn't appear to cost it a thought.
