The main Ballydehob to Bantry stretch of the N71 will be closed from 8am on Monday July 9th until 8pm on Friday 13th for emergency repair works.

THE main Ballydehob to Bantry stretch of the N71 will be closed from 8am on Monday July 9th until 8pm on Friday 13th for emergency repair works.

The works had been scheduled for last March but were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Cllr Danny Collins (Ind) has who has campaigned for the works, admitted the timing wasn’t ideal during the peak tourism season.

The stretch is the route that tourists using sat nav are directed along, if travelling from Cork to Bantry and onwards into Co Kerry.

However, as there have been many accidents there in recent years, he said  the interim works ‘needed to be done.’

A sum of €4m was recently announced by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), for a completely new surface to be placed on the same section of the road.

No date for those works has yet been announced.
