A PLEA by a letter writer to this newspaper for middle-aged and elderly men to refrain from wearing shorts and showing their hairy hairy, boney legs, with varicose veins has been met with a mix of disbelief and outrage.

The letter by John Streeton, Skibbereen said it was ‘not a pretty sight’ and said that wearing shorts ‘is best left to the younger generation.’

However comments on The Southern Star’s Facebook page ranged from amusement to anger.

One person said: ‘I have white boney, vein filled legs and when it gets hot out come the shorts.

‘I suggest John Streeton avert his eyes because I won’t be changing my summer dress code.’

Another suggested men should wear shorts to the knee, and that anything shorter is ‘questionable.’

‘The bigger issue is the wearing of Speedos at the beach on holidays. Now that makes me want to gouge out my eyes.’

Many comments made light of the topic but one exasperated post read: ‘What next to be censored? Ugly faces? Seriously this man needs to get a grip!’

On that note, one person asked: ‘I wonder how flawless the writer looks?’

The story was even picked up by the Opinion Line on Cork’s 96fm last Friday when presenter Deirdre O’Shaughnessy interviewed Mr Streeton about his controversial letter.
