SIR – We can be in no doubt, with all the discussion which has gone on in the lead-up to the referendum, it is clear; abortion takes a human life.

SIR – We can be in no doubt, with all the discussion which has gone on in the lead-up to the referendum, it is clear; abortion takes a human life.

Life begins at conception and all life is sacred. This has been a cornerstone of Judaeo-Christian civilization for 4,000 years. But to the liberal secular ideology that counts for nothing.

It may pay lip service to religion, but it is essentially atheist. It will have us believe that choice is a human right and that abortion is a simple surgical procedure with no more implications than the removal of an in-growing toe nail.

Let us not be fooled; abortion up to 12 weeks, as is proposed, is only the thin end of the wedge.

Abortion on demand, up to birth, for any reason, is the aim. The way will be left open for any future government to ‘regulate’ abortion law. In order for this to happen the 8th amendment must go, the right to life of the unborn child must be taken away.

There will come a time, possibly sooner than we think, when abortion will be seen for what it is; a cruel, merciless killing of a living child. Abortion will be thrown on the scrapheap of history along with slavery and capital punishment.

It is the most absurd irony; we no longer hang murderers but we are contemplating putting to death children at the most innocent stage of their development before they have the chance to draw breath or experience anything that life has to offer.

So far, it would appear that my compassion is solely for the child and I care nothing for the mother.

But I have every sympathy for a woman who experiences serious complications in pregnancy. Beyond that, I am not qualified to say, but I do know that abortion is wrong, very wrong.

Yours sincerely,

John Streeton,

Lisalohorig,

Skibbereen.
