LEAP Scarecrow Festival has been presented with a special award from the Municipal District of West Cork in recognition of its innovation and efforts to support local businesses.

The local authority chairman, Declan Hurley, had the honour of presenting a crystal vase and a €500 cheque to Rita Ryan, who is one of the hardworking members of the committee behind the innovative annual festival.

Cllr Hurley (Ind) commented on the unique appeal of the festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to Leap from all over Cork county, and continues to endear itself to families everywhere.

‘This Halloween festival, which is enjoyed by young and old alike, has been made possible through a huge effort on the part of the entire community,’ said the chairman.

‘The festival – which features more than 150 scarecrows in a variety of grim and humorous poses all along the main thoroughfare – is a shinning example of what communities can achieve.’

Rita Ryan thanked the local authority for honouring the festival and she also acknowledged the festival’s many sponsors who have been tremendously supportive.

Each of the councillors congratulated Rita and the committee and they spoke with admiration of the many other successful developments in Leap in recent years, such as the opening of a new post office in 2016, and the community’s willingness to help and support local businesses.
