A BODY has been recovered in the search for a fisherman missing off the coast of West Cork.

The body was recovered by the Schull Community rescue boat after they resumed their search early this morning.

The alert was raised after the fisherman failed to return last night after embarking on a fishing trip yesterday morning around 11am from Schull.

Lifeboats, a Coast Guard helicopter and local search and rescue units had been involved in a search for the man, along with the naval vessel the LE Orla which had travelled from Castletownbere late last night to help in the search.

Baltimore lifeboat and the Schull inshore rescue unit were also involved in the major search operation, along the coast between Schull Harbour and Cape Clear Island.

A boat had been found earlier in the vicinity of Long Island, off the Schull shore.
