WOLFE Tone Square in Bantry will be the place to be on World Mental Health Day on Saturday, October 10th.

The Square will be the venue for a ‘Big Sing’ event, which is being organised by Caz Jeffreys, the choir facilitator with Acapellabella, in association with the West Cork Mental Health Services.

The event is part of a programme of activities designed to bring awareness to issues surrounding mental health and is intended to develop and grow into an annual event.

In the lead-up to October 10th, Acapellabella will be hosting ‘open door’ sessions in Ballydehob on Thursday evenings, starting on September 10th next.

All are welcome to come along, meet the group, and learn the songs in preparation for the ‘Big Sing’ event.

Additional workshops are also being lined up for Bantry, Dunmanway and Castletownbere. No previous experience of group singing is required.

According to Caz, ‘the aim is to bring song onto the streets and smiles onto faces because singing promotes positive mental health. Acapellabella will provide a space where a diverse group of people can enjoy the pleasures of singing together without pressure or judgement,’ she said.

‘It encourages self-confidence and creates a sense of comradeship and belonging. And people leave the session feeling uplifted.’
