A FORUM for the exchange of views took place at the Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre this week to discuss the possibility of an Arts Trail throughout West Cork, from Beara to Bandon.

The meeting was chaired by Arts Centre chairman Declan Tiernan, and attended by County Mayor Alan Coleman and Ian Dempsey of West Cork Development, with representatives from galleries, tourism, arts, music and theatre festivals.

Mayor Coleman spoke of the strengths of West Cork in the food and tourism sectors, and the natural progression to identify and promote the region’s rich arts culture.

The discussion heard that the approach needs to be unified, identifying the level and quality of the sector. While there was general agreement on the importance of progressing the art trail as soon as possible, it was agreed that a sustained market-led approach is required to move it forward.

With a network of artists throughout the region, it is necessary to identify and map the region using digital and branding mechanisms to work side by side with existing brands such as Fuschia and the Wild Atlantic Way, the Forum heard.
