A delay in resolving a land registration issue at Rosscarbery playground continues to rumble on as the unique location of the playground, on neither land nor sea, means that registration of the playground is proving difficult, writes Jackie Keogh.

Cllr Isobel Towse raised the matter, which has been dragging on since 2021, at a meeting of the West Cork Municipal District (WCMD).

The playground is on the foreshore, on reclaimed ground. No formal title of ownership means that the playground is ineligible for grant funding. Cllr Towse urged the council to pursue ownership titles to resolve this matter: ‘Can we put pressure on the county solicitor to resolve the ownership issue because it is preventing a local voluntary committee from applying for grant funding?’

Cllr Towse also pointed out that the local voluntary group who oversee the care of the popular amenity, have successfully raised €57,000 in funding and ‘would like to see their money spent’.

The fact that it is a reclaimed foreshore is a complication because all foreshores are owned by the state. One possible solution being considered would be to get a licence or lease, but that is also complicated by the fact that it is not the local authority that is occupying the site.

Senior executive officer, Noreen O’Mahony, said council officials would liaise with their solicitor and report back to members.
