New research by Virgin Media Ireland has revealed which Irish counties have produced the most Oscar nominees and winners, highlighting how widely Irish talent is spread across the country
Cork ranked among Ireland's Oscar hotspots and one of the county’s most notable Oscar-recognised figures is Cillian Murphy, who won Best Actor in a Leading Role for Oppenheimer in 2023.
But that’s not all as Cork filmmaker Louis Marcus became the first Corkman to be nominated for an Academy Award, receiving nominations for Children at Work (Best Documentary Short Film) in 1974 and Conquest of Light (Best Live Action Short Film) in 1976.
Dublin takes the crown with a combined total of 53 Oscar nominations and wins, the highest number of Academy Award recognised figures from any Irish county.
Some well-known Oscar nominees and winners from Dublin include Brenda Fricker, who won Best Supporting Actress for My Left Foot in 1989 and became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award.
Galway and Cork tie for third place, with a combined total of five Oscar nominations and wins.
In Galway, much of the success comes from filmmaker Martin McDonagh, who spent much of his childhood in Connemara and won Best Live Action Short for Six Shooter in 2006.
He later received nominations for In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin.
In Cork, Cillian Murphy won Best Actor for Oppenheimer in 2024, while Nora Twomey received Best Animated Feature Film nominations for The Secret of Kells and The Breadwinner.
