Durrus Cheese – handmade in Coomkeen since 1979

The story of Durrus Cheese begins in the early 1970s, when Jeffa Gill bought a small farm in the beautiful valley of Coomkeen, near Durrus village in west Cork.  She set about rebuilding the tumbling down farmhouse, growing vegetables and milking cows, and soon began experimenting with making cheese as a way of providing for her family.

Over 40 years later, Durrus Cheese continues to be made by hand using traditional techniques, with Jeffa now joined by her daughter Sarah at the family farm.  The milk is sourced locally, from cows which graze lush meadows overlooking the sea, a rich mixed pasture which is a cheese makers dream.

Jeffa and Sarah remain dedicated to producing the highest quality products, whilst staying true to their principles of sustainability, quality and enjoying what they do.

As well as the classic Durrus Cheese, their range now includes the multi-award winning Durrus Óg, as well as Durrus Smoked and a mature hard cheese, Dunmanus.
