Call for ‘patience' in Bandon as five years of flood works ahead

‘PATIENCE, patience, patience,’ was the message from Cork County Council chief executive Tim Lucey, at a breakfast briefing for the people of Bandon last week.

Speaking to a packed town hall, for the ‘Working Together - Delivering Together.’ breakfast meeting, Mr Lucey said that the town of Bandon has ‘phenomenal potential’ but there is a lot of necessary work ahead, with the inevitable disruption to town’s infrastructure.

‘Cork County Council promotes the conditions required for economic growth and community development in Bandon. It is vital that we all work together to realise the potential of Bandon and its surrounds,’ Mr Lucey said. ‘Cork County Council is creating the conditions that will provide local businesses and communities with a phenomenal opportunity to maximise the return from a town which has incredible potential.’

Mr Lucey said that, with the Flood Relief Scheme, Main Drainage Scheme, Water and Wastewater Networks, Transportation and Public Realm Enhancement Plan (TREP) and the Town Centre Public Realm Design, there was five years of work yet to be completed in Bandon.

Cllr Rachel McCarthy (SF), chair of the Bandon/Kinsale municipal district, speaking to The Southern Star said that while there is a lot of work ahead she is confident that Bandon, the community, the businesses, and the surrounding area would soon see the benefit and reap the rewards.

‘There is no doubt that there will be a lot of disruption ahead during the construction works but I know that if we all work together the future for the town and all those, working, living or pasting through will be immensely better,’ Cllr McCarthy said.

A northern relief road for Bandon was also highlighted as priority for town.

Mr Lucey also called on the individual community groups and business organisations to cooperation and coordinate to develop local plans and strategies for the future development of Bandon.

‘These are projects which will support and protect business in Bandon, will create future economic opportunities, will enhance community development and will ultimately maximise Bandon’s potential. 

By working together we will create success,’ Mr Lucey said.
