All-Ireland winning Cork minor footballer wins Sports Star Junior Award

RYAN O’Donovan certainly left his mark on the 2019 All-Ireland minor football championship.

The Barryroe teenager played a leading role in the Rebels’ march to All-Ireland glory, and his contribution in the final triumph against Galway was key in a thrilling game.

Sprung from the bench late in normal time, O’Donovan scored 1-2 in extra-time as Cork outlasted Galway to win 3-20 to 3-14. It was his goal in the opening minute of extra-time that set the tone for Cork to dominate and power to the county’s first All-Ireland MFC crown in 19 years.

All through the championship, O’Donovan made his presence felt in the Cork attack and finished the Munster campaign as top scorer with 1-11 (7f). Into the All-Ireland series, he scored 0-3 off the bench against Monaghan and then 0-2 against Mayo in the All-Ireland final – and that’s why is is a deserving recipient of a Celtic Ross West Cork Youth Sports Star quarterly award after his heroics this season.

Four West Cork youth sports stars are honoured with quarterly awards every year and then one is selected as the winner and will be honoured at the gala West Cork Sports Star Awards night in January.
