A TALENTED West Cork soccer player who is attracting interest from English clubs played an important role in the Republic of Ireland U15’s recent UEFA Development Tournament success in Mayo.

Caheragh teenager Liam Murray (14) featured in all three games for the young Boys in Green as they defeated Latvia, Faroe Islands and Luxembourg to finish the tournament with a 100 per cent record after scoring 15 goals and conceding only one.

Former Skibbereen AFC player Liam, who plays on the left wing, came on as a sub in the 3-1 win against Latvia, started the 4-0 victory against the Faroe Islands and came on as a sub in the 8-0 hammering of Luxembourg.

‘It was a great experience for Liam, he played in all three games and really enjoyed testing himself against international teams, as well as seeing what it was like to be part of a team in an international tournament,’ his proud father Patrick said.

Earlier this year Liam played with the FAI Emerging Talent Programme’s 2005 National Academy that took on The Netherlands National Academy in Dublin, and since then he has featured in the Kennedy Cup and is also starring for his club side, College Corinthians’ U15s. The second-year Skibbereen Community School student is also captain of the Cork Schoolboys League U15 team.

Given his rise, it’s no surprise that there has been interest in Liam from across the water and already he has made two trips to Championship outfit Charlton Athletic, the most recent during the mid-term break. Any move on a scholarship will have to wait until July 2021, when he will be 16-years-old, but it’s encouraging to see that his talent has been spotted and that he is on the radar of English clubs.
