The Cill na Martra welterweight showed plenty of grit and determination in her quarter final meeting in Siberia

Christina Desmond's bid to land a medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude Siberia on fell short Thursday afternoon.

The Cill na Martra welterwight showed plenty of grit and determination in her quarter final meeting with Turkish opponent Semeneli but the decision ultimately went against her.

Semeneli started fast in the opening round, landing her jab at will with Desmond struggling to get to grips with the pace.

A questionable standing eight count from the referee towards the end of the round left the Cork-woman with it all to do.

Round two was much closer with both women landing big punches in what developed into a tough, tough fight.

Desmond was forced to throw caution to the win in round three as she marched Semeneli  down but it wasn't to be for the recently qualified Garda as the judges awarded the Turkish boxer a unanimous decision.

Despite not medalling at the Championships, it was still and impressive showing from Desmond in Siberia and she will have been particularly buoyed by her win over England's Sandy Ryan in the last 32.
