Tracton are very experienced, and they might well win this title, but Courcey Rovers will be very hard to dethrone, and they could just shade this and retain their title.

THE blue riband event of Carrigdhoun hurling, the Good Fish Co. Junior A Hurling Championship final, takes centre-stage this weekend, when reigning champions Courcey Rovers take on Tracton at 4pm on Sunday in Shanbally.

While Courceys had previously won this title on four occasions, last year’s thrilling triumph against Valley Rovers was the first time that they had won it with their second team, while Tracton’s last title, also with their second team, was back in 1987.

Courcey Rovers have been very impressive in their campaign so far. They defeated Carrigaline in the first round on a 4-15 to 0-11 scoreline and they followed that up with a 1-23 to 1-12 win against Kinsale in the quarter-final before they saw off Shamrocks by 1-18 to 2-8 in the semi-final.

Tracton have also been impressive. They defeated Valley Rovers by 3-16 to 0-12 in the opening round and they then received a bye to the semi-final, whey they again saw off Valleys, this time on a 0-20 to 0-13 scoreline.

Courcey’s will have Timmy Keating in goal, with Cormac Duggan, Donal Lordan and Willie Jefferies forming part of a strong full-back line, while the half-back line of Denis Coghlan, Vincie Hurley and Conor Ryan are an excellent combination.

Gavin Moloney and Liam Collins at midfield are a mobile pairing, while their forward line of an Terrance and John Collins, Thomas Connery, Brendan Ryan, Niall Moloney and Stan Russell can all score, with young DJ Twomey offering a huge threat from the bench.

Tracton will have Kieran Lyons in goal and he will have the very experienced Eoin and Frank Kingston, Billy Lynch, Gearóid Kingston and Kieran Corrigan in front of him. Kieran Lynch and Alan Kiley will bring youth and experience to the midfield.

David Griffin is their top scorer and he is also deadly from placed balls, while they will look to Seán Kiely, David and Edser O’Callaghan, Philip Mullane and Jason Nunan to share the scoring burden with Griffin.

Tracton are very experienced, and they might well win this title, but Courcey Rovers will be very hard to dethrone, and they could just shade this and retain their title. The game will be preceded by the football semi-final meeting of Ballinhassig and Carrigaline.
