FOUR superbly taken goals enabled Clonakilty AFC retain their West Cork League PremierHiSpecCars.com Premier Division status at the expense of local rivals Clonakilty Town last Sunday.

It means the Ballyvackey club will play Premier Division football next season. As for Town, attention turns to bottom placed Spartak Mossgrove and the outcome of next weekend’s final league game at home to Ballydehob. A Spartak victory will demote Clonakilty Town to the Championship division.

The relegation scenario was straightforward ahead of kick-off in a local derby affectionately dubbed the ‘Clonakilty Classico’. Third from bottom Clon AFC were a point clear of second from bottom Clon Town ahead of both side’s final league fixture. Victory for either team would secure Premier Division survival while the hosts knew a draw would also be enough to retain their top flight status.

Chris Collins opened the scoring for the winners after eight minutes and Clonakilty AFC led 1-0 at the break.

Shane Bunion doubled their lead in the second half before Iain O’Driscoll made it 3-0 and then Reuben O’Hea a flowing move to net to make it 4-0 shortly after.

Town netted a deserved consolation when Alan Murphy arrowed a marvellous free-kick into the top corner.
