Two of West Cork's most talents sportswomen to be honoured at gala awards on January 19th

BALLINASCARTHY’S Moira Barrett has been selected as the 2018 West Cork Junior Sports Star of the Year.

The Bandon Grammar Leaving Cert student captained the Cork minor camogie team to All-Ireland minor A glory in May 2018, the first time the Rebels have won this particular championship.

That was a huge honour for the Carbery hurler who then went on to play three times for the Cork intermediate team that clinched their All-Ireland in September.

Barrett was selected as a Celtic Ross West Cork Junior Sports Star quarterly award winner along with Josh Brady (rugby), Mel Deasy (golf) and Aaron Mannix (soccer) with the judges then choosing Barrett as the overall winner. She will receive her prize at the gala awards night at the Celtic Ross Hotel on Saturday, January 19th, where former Dublin footballer and All-Star Alan Brogan will be the guest speaker.

‘I’m shocked to win the overall award, it’s a fantastic honour,’ said Barrett this week, as she follows in the footsteps of her close friend Laura Nicholson, the Bandon AC athlete who won this award last year.

Also, at this year’s awards, kickboxer Lily de la Cour will received the 2018 Special Achievement Award, which recognises an outstanding sporting achievement. The talented Bantry kickboxer completed her collection of medals last November when she won gold at the WAKO European Kickboxing Championships. It means that de la Cour has now won World and European gold at junior and senior level; a phenomenal achievement by one of West Cork’s top sports stars.
