Rosscarbery's Brian O’Mahony and Cill na Martra’s JJ Cremin are the overall winners of this year’s Carbery Plastics Skibbereen & District Car Club Championship. They received their awards for the series that were presented at a function in Clonakilty Park Hotel last week.

It was a fourth win for O’Mahony, who notched up a total of 81 points from two night navigation trials and two loose surface autocross events.

Leap’s Diarmuid French was second overall with 69 points - from the club’s navigation trials and autocross events. Former four-time champion driver, Bandon’s Victor Beamish was third on 65 points gained from four Autotest events, the West Cork Rally and the Fastnet Rally.

Meanwhile, in the navigators/co-drivers’ section, JJ Cremin took the spoils with a total of 56 points secured on good performances on the Skibbereen 100 Isles Navigation Trial, the 1000 Shakes Navigation Trial and the West Cork Rally.

Second place went to Blarney’s Derek O’Brien; his points were garnered from the West Cork Rally and the Fastnet Rally with Clonakilty’s Cal McCarthy and from the Carbery Navigation Trial with Carrigaline’s Eric Calnan.

The structure of the club championship that is backed by Carbery Plastics has changed in recent years and it rewards competitors across the many disciplines of the sport.

The successful drivers in the various categories were Clonakilty’s Paul O’Driscoll (Autocross); Fermoy’s Frank Power (Night Navigation Trials), Timoleague’s Connie Lynch (Autotests) and Clonakilty’s Cal McCarthy (Rallying).  In the Navigators section, Drinagh’s Denis O’Donovan won the Night Navigation category and Dripsey’s Gavin Sheehan came out best in the rally class.
