Dr Con tribute night to be held on January 19th

THE life and times of Cork GAA legend Dr Con Murphy will be recalled at a special tribute and celebration night, to be held at City Hall on Saturday, January 19th next year.

On June 6th, 1976, Cork played Kilkenny in hurling and Kerry in football in two practice games to mark the official opening of the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh. As the son and widow of the late Munster Council president Patrick Aloysius ‘Weeshie’ Murphy, Dr Con and his mother Anna were guests of the Cork County Board and that day marked the last time he attended a Cork game in a personal capacity.

Having been asked by Jimmy Barry-Murphy to step in as team doctor to the Cork hurling team, a similar request to look after the footballers followed from Billy Morgan and from there a legend was born.

Over the subsequent four decades, he has been ever-present as players and managers have changed, providing medical expertise as well as acting as unofficial agony uncle. Now assisted by his son Colm with the hurling team and Aidan Kelleher with the football side, his input remains as valued as ever and the years he has given to Cork will be recognised at this gala event.
