GER McCARTHY REPORTS

ADRIGOLE proved too strong for Glenville in a hard-hitting Cork IFC opening round clash at Inchigeela.

Leading by three points at the interval, David Harrington’s opportunistic second-half goal (having earlier fired a penalty over the crossbar) handed the winners a six-point advantage entering the final quarter.

Despite Dan Dennehy coming off the bench to score a late goal, Adrigole withstood Glenville’s comeback and confirmed a place in the third round.

‘I am delighted the way players stood up out there,’ said Adrigole manager Eamon O’Sullivan.

‘We only conceded two or three points from frees and to be honest, I was delighted as we were under the cosh for a long time but managed to come out the other side of it.’

Nell O’Sullivan got Adrigole off the mark with an early point.

Glenville struggled to make any headway and conceded a penalty when Jason Harrington was hauled down in the square. Harrington fired the resulting spot-kick over the bar and Ben Halbert responded with Glenville’s opening score after ten minutes. Dylan O’Donovan hit the crossbar with a stinging effort ahead of Kevin Goggin firing in a rebound after Kieran O’Sullivan’s initial shot was tipped onto the crossbar to make it 1-3 to 0-1.

Adrigole lost Kevin Jer O’Sullivan to injury as Glenville dominated the remainder of the half, reducing the deficit to 1-4 to 0-4 after Ryan O’Sullivan had landed a monster point for the Beara men. A poor third quarter saw both teams waste numerous chances until Dan Dennehy and Jason Harrington exchanged scores.

A hard-hitting encounter was decided when Adrigole’s David Harrington capitalised on a poor kick-out to chip the ball into an empty net after 44 minutes. Next, Cian O’Neill was called upon to block a Glenville goal-bound shot before David Harrington and Jason Harrington points were matched by two Dilan O’Donovan scores.

Neil O’Sullivan looked to have wrapped things up with a glorious effort from way out the pitch but Glenville refused to go quietly as Dan Dennehy found the corner of the net in the final minute. That made it 2-8 to 1-7 ahead of late Neil O’Sullivan (free) and Kevin Goggin points wrapping up a terrific Adrigole victory.
