A WOMAN caught with trace elements of cannabis in a grinder that was found in her handbag has been fined €200 for the offence.

Cassandra Le Page of 15 High Street, Skibbereen, had her handbag searched by Garda Jason Cotter at High Street in the town at 9.15pm on March 2nd last.

The accused – a 24-year-old mother-of-two – who was legally represented by Ray Hennessy, solicitor, said it was her first time out in ages and she had just taken the handbag without checking the contents.

She admitted that she had previously used cannabis but said she has since given it up.

The accused told the court she is now seeing a counsellor and has ‘no intention of using cannabis ever again.’

Sgt Paul Kelly for the prosecution at Skibbereen District Court said the traces of cannabis remaining in the grinder were valued at €12, and he told Judge James McNulty that the accused has two previous convictions under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Judge McNulty noted that as a mother of a one-year-old and a four-year-old she would need to keep her ‘head clear’.
