THE Save Our Skibbereen (SOS) campaign to oppose the proposed plastics factory for Skibbereen has welcomed the news that the factory's owners have withdrawn their application for planning.

THE Save Our Skibbereen (SOS) campaign to oppose the proposed plastics factory for Skibbereen has welcomed the news that the factory’s owners have withdrawn their application for planning.

‘An Bord Pleanála sent notification today to our chairperson Brendan McCarthy that RTP Company T/A Daly Products Ltd have withdrawn their application for the plastic factory and that there is no 'live' planning application now,’ said a statement issued today.

It added: ‘This case is now closed.’

The SOS campaign was launched after the company’s plan for a plastics nurdle factory at Poundlick on the edge of town was given permission by Cork County Council.

A number of locals, opposed to the plan, launched a high-profile campaign which was backed by personalities like David Puttnam and Jeremy Irons.

They were successful in their appeal to An Bord Pleanala in July when An Bord Pleanala consented to the court granting an order quashing the decision of the Bord dated 29th November 2018 which had permitted the construction of the thermoplastic compounds production facility on the Baltimore Road.

‘Our campaign has been successful in ways we could never have imagined when we started. This has been a brilliant example of 'People Power',’ a statement, issued this evening, said.
