Fun, music and football will be to the forefront when the Sam Maguire 7s hits Dunmanway on September 7th

With less than two weeks to go until the inaugural Sam Maguire 7s tournament, excitement is building, which was in evidence at Tuesday nights well attended press launch at the birthplace of Sam Maguire in Dunmanway.

Along with committee members, sponsors and participating teams, Cork hurling legend Seán Óg Ó hAilpín was on hand to promote this exciting event.

‘Gaelic games is the lifeblood of who we are. It gives us our identity number one and then you have the economic reasons for the town of Dunmanway which is another positive,’ the three time All Ireland winner said when speaking to The Southern Star about the upcoming football extravaganza.

The idea behind the Sam Maguire 7s came about thanks to a group of community-based volunteers who are interested in sport and promoting the town of Dunmanway.

The tournament is unique in that it includes both men’s and ladies’ competitions of all grades and organisers have been thrilled with the number of entries received.

It’s not solely about football though as noted by Deirdre Kelly from the Dunmanway Chamber of Commerce.

‘We’ll also have a long puc competition for adults and underage as well as a family fun day which will run from 1pm until 5pm followed by live music from Comhaltas later in the evening’.

The importance of the Sam Maguire 7s to the town of Dunmanway was one of the main themes of Tuesday’s event, something Andrew Healy from Healy’s SuperValu Dunmanway was keen to point out.

‘It’s hugely important. A lot of different organisations within the town are getting behind it. It’s very important for the economy in the town’.

An event of this scale and ambition doesn’t come about without plenty of work, in particular teamwork.

‘We’ve been at this for the best part of a year,’ said Deirdre Kelly of the Dunmanway Chamber.

‘We’ve had no problem getting sponsors on board and it’s been a huge community effort with a huge amount of volunteers so we’re hoping for a really, really great day’.

Good fun on the day is guaranteed according to Doheny’s GAA Chairperson Mary Maybury.

‘People who come can expect good fun and loads of football’.
