CORK County Council has issued a clarification in relation to a story in this week's Southern Star, referencing a tourist building planned for Dursey Island.

CORK County Council has clarified that the story on the front page of this week’s Southern Star article headlined ‘Tourist building is more suitable for Star Wars than for Dursey Island’ relates to a planning application for a private development on Dursey Island, and is not connected in any way with the Council’s initiative, in association with Fáilte Ireland, regarding the Dursey Island Cable Car Project currently under design.

Cork County Council will be making a completely separate planning application for the Cable Car Project, under Section 226 of the Planning & Development Act 2000, to An Bord Pleanála within the next two weeks.

The Cable Car Project involves the replacement of the existing cableway system, which is approaching the end of its operational life, with a modern cableway system including a cable car station, small sheltered waiting area and welfare facilities on the Island and a cable car station, visitor centre, shop, cafe and welfare facilities on the mainland together with improved car parking facilities.

The Cable Car planning documents, including the EIAR & NIS, will be uploaded onto the Council’s website and a consultation period of six weeks for the submission of observations to An Bord Pleanála will commence on the date of planning submission.

Additionally, the Cable Car planning documents will be available for inspection during the six-weeksconsultation period at County Hall and locally in Castletownbere and Skibbereen.

‘Cork County Council have received no requests in relation to this project from FIE,’ the Council states, adding: ‘Cork County Council wishes to reiterate that the private planning application which was the subject of the FIE press release and the Southern Star article is not connected to the Dursey Island Cable Car & Visitor Centre Development project.’
