Huts make beaches like Baywatch – without Pamela!

State-of-the-art lifeguard huts are soon to feature on West Cork beaches.

Funding from Cork County Council’s 2018 budget has paid for three new huts, including the one for Tragumna, that the area engineer, Sarah Sinnott said is ‘ready to go’.

Council official Mac Dara O h-Ici confirmed that two more – one for Barleycove on the Mizen Peninsula and another for the Warren in Rosscarbery – will be put in place later this year.

The sum of €35,000 has also been set aside in this year’s budget for the purchase of more huts, which are modelled on those used by the RNLI in the UK, and come equipped with electric, gas and solar panels.

Cllr Joe Carroll (FF) said: ‘They are more like something you’d see on Baywatch,’ and – with a forlorn afterthought – added: ‘but we don’t have Pamela’. He said the investment was timely. ‘I’ve always said the Cork County Council never committed itself enough to our coastline, but now we have.

‘We could be looking up at the mountains forever – there is no money to be had up there. At the beaches is where the money is.’

Mr O h-Ici said the Council has been investing in the coastline, including providing funding for public conveniences at public beaches, and said the huts were another way of making that investment visible.
