Defibrillators to be installed at five local garda stations

PLANS by gardaí to install public defibrillators at five garda stations in West Cork will mean that those trained as first responders will have easy access to them in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan officially opened the first of these defibrillators at Bandon Garda Station while on a visit to West Cork for a number of engagements. 

Speaking to The Southern Star, Chief Supt Con Cadogan said the location of this defibrillator and four others in the Cork West Division will now be listed on the national ambulance app,  in what  is a new pilot initiative.

‘It will be a focal point for people in Bandon in the event of an emergency and this defibrillator will be located in the public area near the main entrance here in Bandon,’ said Chief Supt Cadogan.

‘We are also looking to put defibrillators  in the public areas of both Clonakilty and Bantry garda stations, which are 24-hour stations, as well as installing  one externally near the main entrance to Skibbereen Garda Station and one at Ballinspittle garda station in the future.’

‘Everyone should be aware of this as it could  save a life one day,’ he added.

Justice Minister Flanagan was in West Cork for a number of engagements throughout last Friday week.

While at Bandon Garda Station he also met with members of the local IFA, as well as community representatives from Ballinspittle regarding the re-opening of the village’s garda station, which closed in 2013.
