PEOPLE living on the Mizen Peninsula have pledged their support for the first ever Darkness into Light walk in Schull, in aid of Pieta House.

A recent meeting in the Parish Hall attracted a strong number of supporters – all of whom are committed to organising their own fundraising walk in aid of the suicide prevention charity.

One of the organisers, Ellen Logan, confirmed that Darren Coyle of Pieta House in Cork will address their follow-up meeting, which will take place at 7pm in the Parish Hall on Monday, February 11th. Ms Logan said: ‘There is a lot of interest locally. And with the walks having a 4am start, the closer to home the better!’

She said: ‘Local woman, Marie McFarlane, was the person who started the ball rolling and the community is 100% behind her.’ And she invited anyone interested in helping to prepare the groundwork for the 5km walk to attend that meeting, as well as to sign up for the annual Darkness into Light, which will take place this year on Saturday, May 11th.

Ms Logan also told The Southern Star: ‘We will also be looking for volunteers to help marshal this event and we’ll be serving refreshments afterwards in the Parish Hall.’
