Having served 38 years in An Garda Siochána, Supt Michael Fitzpatrick of Macroom Garda Station retired from the service recently.

HAVING served 38 years in An Garda Siochána, Supt Michael Fitzpatrick of Macroom Garda Station retired  from the service recently.

The Cork city native, who also turned 60 recently, served his last shift on the previous Wednesday night, having been stationed in Macroom for the past five years.

Speaking to The Southern Star, Supt Fitzpatrick said he has no plans for the future just yet.

‘I will miss the job and my colleagues here and the craic. I’ve seen a lot of changes down through the years too during my career in An Garda Siochána,’ said Supt Fitzpatrick.

To mark his retirement from the force, Supt Fitzpatrick held a very successful coffee morning on a recent Friday morning in the Castle Hotel in Macroom. Over €2,000 was raised for West Cork Rapid Response and it gave local people, as well as his garda colleagues, an opportunity to wish him all the best in his retirement.

Based at Macroom Garda Station since 2014, he previously served as superintendent in Bantry Garda Station and in Listowel Garda Station before that.

Taking over the role as the new superintendent is Timoleague-born Det Inspector Joe Moore.

The 55-year-old father-of-two has been based at Bandon Garda Station for the past 10 years where he has been involved in many serious investigations including murder and drug detections. He previously served as a Det Sgt in Cork city and also as Insp in Listowel. He took up his new position last Friday.
