It is the duty of the Board to protect the health of the children. I'd like to know what the school proposes to do about it and what information they will be seeking to guarantee our children's safety.

SIR – I am writing to you because it has come to my attention that neither Cork County Council nor An Bord Pleanala have requested any detailed data about the emissions that will come from the chimneys of the proposed plastics factory on the Baltimore Road. It is hard to believe, and many people may be unaware of the fact, that no environmental impact study has been asked for for this development.

What is worrying is that the prevailing winds will carry these toxic emissions from the 17m chimney stacks to the nearby Skibbereen Community School, where hundreds of local children, some of whom are already asthmatic, will be breathing these fumes on a daily basis. I believe the school has a responsibility to guarantee that our children are educated in a safe, toxic-fume free environment.

It is the duty of the Board to protect the health of the children. I'd like to know what the school proposes to do about it and what information they will be seeking to guarantee our children's safety.

Yours Sincerely,

Anne Crossey,

Lough Ine,

Skibbereen.
