A GLAMPING site looks set to be developed on Bere Island after it has been provisionally approved for €150,000 in Leader funding.

The project by Wild Atlantic Glamping Ltd is one of 28 contracts which have been approved, or provisionally approved, by the West Cork Local Area Group, to the value of €1,539,624.

Glamping is an upmarket version of camping, where large tents are provided for guests, with beds, toiletries and other extras included.

In total, 91 projects worth over €4m have been approved since the most recent round of Leader funding was launched by Cork County Council in 2017.

The programme supports local and community projects across a diverse range of

themes including rural tourism, enterprise development, rural towns, access to broadband,

basic services targeted at hard-to-reach communities, rural youth, protection and sustainable use of water resources, protection and improvement of local biodiversity, and development of renewable energy.

Decisions on funding are made at a local level by the three Local Action Groups

(LAGs), which are sub groups of Cork County Council’s Local Community Development

Committees (LCDCs) in North, South and West Cork.

Finbarr Harrington, chair of the West Cork group, which has a current allocation of €3,691,755, is encouraging any group with an idea to apply for funding and emphasised the support was there for them.

‘The funding is there and it costs nothing to apply,’ he said.

Other groups successful in securing funding include Ballydehob Community Association (€200,000)  who are well advanced in extending the local hall; Whiddy Island Development Association (€243,951) for their hall; Drinagh Community Association who have €10,929 for an outdoor gym, and Skibbereen Family Resource Centre who have provisional approval of €135,093 to renovate their building.
