Pupils' funny waste system film goes viral

A FUNNY – but also educational – video made by sixth class pupils of Timoleague National School, about the sewerage scheme taking place in their village, has gone viral. 

Their detailed three-and- a-half minute video about the scheme impressed the contractors behind the Timoleague Courtmacsherry Sewerage Scheme so much that they recently visited the school to present them with vouchers.

Representatives from Glan Agua/MEIC and Irish Water presented the class with vouchers worth €500 for their achievements, as well as treats for all the other classes in the school.

Speaking to c sixth class teacher Mrs Nicola Gleeson said that their project, which was completed as part of  Science Week, grew legs and the pupils  even made their own model of the scheme and the village and what the waterworks might look like.

‘We planned out scenes for the video and used an editing app and the students acted out roles as news reporters, engineers and local people. 

‘We then uploaded it to YouTube at the start of November and as soon as it went up, we started hearing things back about it,’ said Nicola.

‘They were absolutely delighted then when they heard that the bosses of the project were so impressed with their video and were presenting them with vouchers for their efforts.’

Senior resident engineer Kieran Coffey said that he had visited the school ahead of the commencement of the works to ensure that the pupils and staff were properly informed of the process.

‘Following my visit, I was not expecting such a creative and brilliant response. The video created by the children showed an impressive knowledge of the works,’ said Kieran.

‘Their video is a credit to the children and to the ethos of the school to allow such creativity to thrive. I was delighted to present a voucher for €250 to the school on behalf of Irish Water to reward such creativity.’ They got a second voucher from contractor Glan Agua/MEIC.

Contracts director Andrew Driver also had high praise for the students.

‘The school has got so used to dealing with our engineers on a daily basis and listening to our technical jargon that they decided to gather up all our ‘technical phrases’ and act out a documentary about the construction works being undertaken,’ said Andrew.
