A SKIBBEREEN hairstylist who opened her own business in the depths of the recession has won the ‘Best Salon in Cork’ accolade at the Cork Business Awards.

Simone Best – the daughter of well-known local stylists Peter and Mona Best – had started out in the world of fashion, having studied at the London College of Fashion, but she switched careers at the age of 21 and followed in her parent’s footsteps.

After finishing her training, Simone enjoyed a good career with Peter Marks, where she was a valued member of their artistic team and won awards for the salon.

She also became a craft educator for Matrix, which is part of the L’oreal group, before deciding in 2009 to open her own salon in Blackrock in Cork.

‘When we opened,’ Simone said, ‘it was the start of the recession and everyone said I was mad, but I was determined to do it.’

Simone said she felt ‘elated’ when her salon, Simone Best Hair Styling, took the top award. And speaking on behalf of her staff, she said: ‘It goes to show that hard work pays off.’

Simone also confirmed that her salon is in with a chance to win three more awards at the Hi Style Awards, which will take place in Cork on November 24th next.

The judges said the award was ‘in recognition of a hair salon that is progressive and in high demand.’
