A PODCAST memoir dedicated to four of his deceased friends by a Clonakilty poet has grabbed the attention of listeners after the first two episodes have been broadcast.

Dave Lordan’s The Dead Friends is a six-part series that captures the vibrant youth culture in West Cork of the early 90s.

The Dead Friends is a six-part series podcast with one episode being released each week right up until Hallowe’en when the whole series will be released as an audiobook and ebook.

Dave said: ‘This podcast is about my four friends who all died over the years in different circumstances. It kicks off at a party in a bedsit in Dunmanway in 1993 at the height of mushroom season. My dead friends are a couple of ravers, a punk and a mod and I’m the Curehead and it delves into each of their lives and each of their deaths culminating in a dramatic climax at Gatsby’s nightclub in Dunmanway.

‘As all of this happened in the pre-internet era and one of the things that drew me to make this podcast was that there is no mention of any of my four friends on the internet, bar one coroner’s report into one of their deaths.’

He added: ‘There has been great feedback to the first episode which is hosted on The Dublin Inquirer website and they said it got the most hits they got for a podcast in any day.

‘My parents have listened to it too and that was their first foray into podcasting.’

Based in Greystones in Co Wicklow now, Dave has his own recording studio there and, as well as being a live performer and multimedia performer, he is also an established poet.

One of his fans is none other than Christy Moore, who made a song out of one of Dave’s poems Lost Tribe of Wicklow Mountains, which appeared on his last album.

‘Christy is a big fan of my work and that was brilliant that he took one of my poems and made a song out of it,’ added Dave.

For anyone interested in the pre-internet period of The Stone Roses, Spiral Tribe and all night raves in West Cork The Dead Friends will certainly resonate.

The Dead Friends podcast is hosted on the Dublin Inquirer site and an episode will be released weekly until October 31st.
