Paulina is Clon's Carer of the Year

PAULINA Karcz was named as the 2018 Irish Red Cross Clonakilty Branch Chloe Burke Carer of the Year at the annual awards ceremony in Dunmore House Hotel Clonakilty on Saturday, September 29th.

Paulina, who is originally from Poland, moved to Clonakilty 12 years ago with her family to set up a new live in Ireland, but sadly tragedy hit the family in 2016 when Paulina’s dad passed away suddenly.

Paulina, along with her mother Monika and sister Wiktoria, had their lives completely turned upside down as her dad was the sole carer for her mother Monika. At the time, Paulina, at the very young age of 18 years and in her Leaving Cert year in school, took om the role as carer for her dear mother, who is confined to a wheelchair, and Paulina, with help from her sister Wiktoria, assist their mom with her everyday life.

Paulina, who is now aged 21, balances a very hectic lifestyle to ensure that her family can get by. Paulina is in her third year of studies in University College Cork, where she is studying biochemistry while also holding down, not one but two part-time jobs, while also looking after her family from day to day.

Paulina’s friends who nominated her for the Chloe Burke Carer of the Year Award described her as loving and caring young lady who touches the hearts of all who are lucky enough to know her and who puts the needs of her family and loved ones to the fore in her life. 

Also honoured on the night, as shortlisted award recipients, were Martin Collins, Dunmore, Clonakilty, who was nominated for the care he gives to his aunt, and Bernadette Dewey Walshe for caring for both her parents while also being involved in many voluntary organisations.
