WORKERS from the Home Help service, Community Nurses, Meals on Wheels and other people who are carers for family members attended a recent ecumenical service to celebrate the work they do in the community.

The service was led by Rev Cliff Jeffers, with Rev Greg Alexander, Fr Ted Collins and Rev Garrett Cody, who is also a manager in the Home Help service.

Rev Jeffers told The Southern Star: ‘The idea for the service came three years ago, following a funeral of an elderly man who had been housebound for several years but was able to live independently in his own home with the support of community nursing and the Home Help service.

‘What struck me when talking to these dedicated carers, was the bond of affection that they had for the man they had been supporting, and it was the seed of the idea of having this service to celebrate their work.’

At the service those who attended had the opportunity to light a candle for those they were caring for, and they also had an opportunity to have their hands blessed with holy oil.

The parish of St Mary’s in Dunmanway provided tea and refreshments after the service and gave the carers an opportunity to meet and talk to one another about the work they do.
