FIREFIGHTERS who were demonstrating chip pan safety to school children were called from the scene to deal with – a chip pan fire.

Cork County Council firefighters have, in recent weeks,  visited 31 schools throughout West Cork, from Allihies to Timoleague and in between, with their Chip Pan Display Unit which they use to show how easily it can turn into a real danger.

However, during one such demonstration, Dunmanway Fire Brigade had a call-out to a chip pan fire -showing just how prevalent the hazard is.

Fire Safety in the Home was the key message that firefighters discussed with the pupils on their visits. Some of the topics included: smoke alarms, escape plans, what to do, and what not to do, in the event of a fire.

Their primary message was to make fire safety in the home fun, and not a chore.
