Polish man (35) named as Ballincollig murder victim

Gardaí at Gurranabraher in Cork investigating the murder of Mikolaj Wilk at The Bridge House, Maglin, Ballincollig, held a press briefing this (Sunday) afternoon.

Mikolaj Wilk, a 35-year-old, also known as Nick, resided at this address with his partner, who is in her early 30s. Both are originally from Poland. Garda responded to an incident at 3.17am this morning and were on the scene in less than five minutes.

The assailants had fled the scene at that time, the direction of travel or mode of transport is unknown. On arrival, Gardaí found Mr Wilk, seriously injured with life-threatening injuries. They gave medical attention while awaiting the arrival of the paramedics.

Mr Wilks was removed to the Cork University Hospital, where, despite the best efforts of the medical teams at the hospital, he died of his injuries. His partner, Elzbieta, was also removed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At approximately, 4.20am, Cork County Fire Service, responded to a car on fire at Iniskenny, Ballinora, Waterfall. This car was found within 6km by road from the incident at the Bridge House, Maglin, Ballincollig.

Gardaí believe this car to be a BMW 3 series. Both scenes are currently being preserved and undergoing forensic examinations.

The coroner has been notified and the services of the State pathologist have been requested. The post mortem is scheduled for Monday morning at 9am.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information or to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Gardaí.

They are particularly anxious to speak to any drivers who may have dash cam footage and travelled in the following areas, Maglin, Ballincollig, Ballinora and Waterfall areas between 2am and 5am on Sunday morning, or if anyone saw any suspicious or unusual activities in these areas within the last three days.
